Lok Sabha passes  Constitutional amendment Bill to provide 10% reservation to the Economically Weaker Sections

NewDelhi : The Lok Sabha today passed the 124th Constitutional amendment Bill, which provides  10 per cent reservation in jobs and educational institutions for economically weaker sections in the general category,  with a two-third majority. While 323 MPs voted in favor of the bill, only 3 voted against it. The Rajya Sabha will take up the bill on Wednesday.

The winter session has been extended by a day for members in the Upper House. Like in the LokSabha, the Bill needs to be passed by a special majority of two-third of members present in the Rajya Sabha also, not less than half the strength in both. Following this, it will have to be ratified by at least half of the state legislatures. It will also have to face legal challenges, if any.
