Mumbai : Indian benchmark indices opened lower on May 31 with Nifty around 18600 on weak global cues.. At the opening,the BSE Sensex was down 161.93 points or 0.26% at 62,807.20, and the Nifty was down 50.50 points or 0.27% at 18,583.30. By 9.30 the indices extended their losses as Sensex dropped by 247.9 or 0.39% to 62,721.23 and the Nifty fall by 80.95 points or 43% to 18552 points.
About 1159 shares advanced, 960 shares declined, and 96 shares unchanged. HDFC Life, HCL Technologies, Sun Pharma, Tata Motors and Eicher Motors were among major gainers on the Nifty, while losers were SBI, Hindalco, Coal India,Adani Enterprises and JSW Steel.
