Former PM Shinzo Abe assassinated

Biznextindia : Former Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was died after being shot during a campaign trail in the city of Nara on Friday, according to Japanese media.

Abe was giving a speech in front of the Yamato Saidaiji Station when he was attacked at around 11:30 a.m. People who witnessed the shooting told Japanese public broadcaster NHK that a man came up from behind and fired two shots.

After being shot, Abe was transported via a medical helicopter to Nara Medical University in the city of Kashihara, south of central Nara.

The man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and the gun was confiscated, according to the broadcaster. NHK identified the man as Tetsuya Yamagami, a 41-year-old resident of the city of Nara.

Abe played a crucial role in shaping India-Japan relations during his Prime-Ministership. He is also the brain behind formation of the QUAD- a partnership between US, Japan, India and Australia, to counter an aggressive China in the Asia-Pacific.
