Consider two day lockdown in Delhi to improve AQI : CJI to Govt

New Delhi: With Air pollution situation in Delhi and nearby areas worsens, the Supreme Court on Saturday asked the Centre and the Delhi Government to take urgent steps to curb air pollution. CJI NV Ramanna has also asked the government to consider two day lockdown to improve AQI.

Expressing grave concerns about the worsening air quality of Delhi, the CJI said that we have been forced to wear masks at home also, the situation is very serious.

A special Bench comprising Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, and Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant also asked the Central and concerned State governments for details regarding supplying happy seeder machines to farmers so that crop stubble burning can be reined in.

Stubble burning by farmers in Haryana and Punjab are said to be causing pollution in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Western Uttar Pradesh.

“You are saying lakhs of (happy seeder) machines are available but the farmers cannot afford these machines. After the landholding law the incentive for the farmers have increased. In winters the stubble can be used for fodder for goats etc in Rajasthan,” said Justice Surya Kant.
