Odisha forms expert panel to fight COVID-19 pandemic

Bhubaneswar:  In view of sharp rise in cases in the ongoing second wave of the pandemic and anticipation of a third wave, the Odisha government on Saturday constituted a high-level advisory committee under the chairmanship of public health expert Dr. K. Srinath Reddy, director Public Health Foundation of India.

The advisory panel, which will have eminent health experts like Dr. Devi Shetty, Dr. Ramakant Panda as members, will suggest measures to the Odisha government to tackle the possible third wave of COVID-19 pandemic, said Suresh Mohapatra, Chief Secretary, Odisha on Saturday.

While in the first wave, the pandemic was mostly affecting the older people, in the second wave more number of younger people are being affected. However, it is anticipated by experts that the third wave could affect children.

Odisha has reported as many as 11,805 new cases on 14th of May which includes 5194 local transmissions. With this, the number of active cases in the state has risen to 106471.

The Union Health Ministry on Saturday said that several states including Odisha, Tamilnadu, West Bengal, Assam, Puduchery are witnessing rising of the curve. The ministry also informed that as many as 28 of 30 districts of the state have positivity rate above 10 per cent.
