Odisha demands long term central assistance as tropical cyclones become frequent

Bhubaneswar: With tropical cyclones have become an annual affair, Odisha has demanded long term financial package from the central government to build cyclone resilient coastal infrastructure.

Odisha, the worst affected state in the cyclone ‘Yaas’, has not demanded any specific financial package during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s review meeting earlier today in Bhubaneswar.  Instead the state has demanded long term solutions to face frequent tropical cyclones including cyclone resilient power and other infrastructures, sustainable protection from storm surge, the special relief commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Jena said.

He said that the state would manage the damages caused by the cyclone from its own resources.

The Prime Minister today chaired a high level review meeting on Cyclone Yaas at Bhubaneswar. The meeting was attended by Odisha Governor Prof. Ganeshi lal, Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Pratap Jena.

Including this year’s ‘Yaas’, Odisha is continuously facing tropical cyclones for the last 3 years. While Fani ravaged the Odisha coast on 2019, cyclone Amphan devastated north Odisha coast last year.
