New Delhi: In a relief to the Maha Vikash Aghadi government, the election commission of India on Friday granted its permission for holding elections to the Legislative Council (MLC) in Maharashtra.

According to reports, the notification of the election will be issued shortly. The elections will be held before May 27 by following all the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health for coronavirus.

Yesterday, Maharastra Governor Bhagat Singh Khosyari had requested the Election Commission to hold election for 9 vacant MLC seats in the state. The decision came two days after Maharastra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackrey dialled Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking him to intervene.

“The Central Government has announced many relaxation measures regarding the enforcement of lockdown in the country” As such the elections to the council seats can be held with certain guidelines,” the governor had said in his letter to the Election commission of India (ECI).

Uddhav Thackrey was sworn in as chief minister on November 28, 2019. However, since he is not a member of either house of the  State  Legislature, he needs to get elected to the  Council before 27th  May 2020. The Election Commission had withheld the election process for these  9 seats following the outbreak of the coronavirus.
