Omicron fear : Sensex plunges over 1300 points, Nifty below 16,600 pts

Mumbai : Indian equity market witnessed a sharp fall on Monday on weak global cues triggered by spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
As on 10.30 BSE Sensex plunged by 1342.15 points or 2.35% to 55669.59 points. NSE Nifty also dropped by 401 points or 2.37% to 16583.30 points.

 

Among Nifty stocks, 46 out of the 50 were in the red today while Tata Motors was the top loser, down 3.57% followed by Tata Steel and JSW Steel, which declined 3.22% and 3.15% respectively. HDFC Bank, SBI, Tata Steel, Grasim, Hindalco, BPCL, Eicher Motors, Ultratech Cement, Bajaj Finserv, Axis bank, NTPC, M&M were the other prominent losers in the Nifty, falling over 2.5% each.

Market open 9.16 am : the BSE Sensex was down 664.78 points or 1.17% at 56346.96, and the Nifty was down 189.50 points or 1.12% at 16795.70. About 724 shares have advanced, 1331 shares declined, and 103 shares are unchanged.

Cipla, Wipro, TCS and Power Grid Corp were among major gainers on the Nifty, while losers were Tata Motors, Tata Steel, JSW Steel, Grasim, BPCL, Bajaj Finserv and SBI.
