New Delhi : The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday refused to put an interim stay on the Citizenship (Amendment)Act,2019 and National Population Register (NPR).

A bench headed by CJI Bobde SA Bobde has rejected the pleas by senior advocate Kapil Sibbal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi to suspend the implementation of CAA for a limited period.

The apex court said it may refer pleas challenging the validity of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) to a larger Constitution bench. Attorney General KK Venugopal, appearing for the Centre, told the bench that the government has been given copies of around 60 pleas out of the petitions. He said it wanted time to respond to pleas which have not been served on it.
