Jaiprakash’s 400 MW Vishnuprayag hydel project closed after Sunday’s Avalanche

Biznextindia :  Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd(JPVL)’s  400 MW Vishnuprayag Hydro Electric Project (VHEP) has been severely damaged due to yesterday’s tragic avalanche causing closure of power generation.  The company on Monday has said that it is analyzing the damage and assessing the time to restart the plant.

“Sudden development of the Force Majeure event led to the closure of the power generation.  River water gushed in through the Tail Race Tunnel of the Project bringing with it the slush. We are analysing all aspects and assessing the time to bring back the Project to its pre closure status (operations were stopped at II am on 7th Feb due to this tragic Glacier event).We remain confident that VHEP will be resuming operations after completing the cleaning / and checking all aspects in a few days” JPVL said in a regulatory filing.

The tragic event took place in the river basin of Dhauli Ganga in Chamoli district (Uttarakhand) between 9.30 am to 11 am on Sunday. As many as 14 people were killed and 170 are missing due to the calamity, according to official sources.

The  Vishnuprayag Hydro Electric Project has its Barrage over Alaknanda River and Project’s Tail Race Tunnel discharging water in river Dhauli Ganga .
