India’s internet subscriber base up 11% in March Quarter, Telecom Sector Revenue dips 1.7%

Bhubaneswar: India’s internet subscriber base has increased by 10.76% to 493.96 million in the January-March Quarter against 445.96 million the previous quarter. The Wireless internet subscriber base is growing exponentially compared to the wired internet users, according to the official data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Out of 493.96 million internet subscribers, Wired Internet subscribers are only 21.24 million, where as Wireless Internet subscribers are 472.72 million, consisting of 95.6% of the total subscriber base. The broadband Internet subscriber base grew by 13.71% from 362.87 million at the end of Dec-17 to 412.60 million at the end of Mar-18. On the other hand, the narrowband Internet subscriber base declined by 2.09% from 83.09 million at the end of Dec-17 to 81.35 million at the end of Mar-18.

According to the report, the number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,190.67 million at the end of Dec-17 to 1,206.22 million at the end of Mar-18, registering a growth rate of 1.31% over the previous quarter. This reflects year-on-year (Y-O-Y) growth of 0.97% over the same quarter of last year.

Gross Revenue (GR) and Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) of Telecom Service Sector for the QE Mar-18 has been Rs.62,198 Crore and  Rs.35,697 Crore respectively. GR increased by 1.82%, however AGR declined by 7.37% in QE Mar-18 as compared to previous quarter. The year-on-year (Y-O-Y) growth in GR and AGR over the same quarter in last year has been -1.76% and -12.57% respectively.
