Bhubaneswar: The Indian Meteorological department on Thursday announced the onset of South-West Monsoon over the southern parts of Kerala.

Earlier, IIMD had predicted that this year’s Monsoon Rainfall would be normal (96 to 104 % of Long Period Average (LPA)).

This year, the south-west monsoon arrived two days later than the normal onset date of 1st June. However, conditions are favorable for further advancement of the Monsoon to other parts of south India in the next few days.

Spatial distribution suggests normal or above normal seasonal rainfall most likely over many areas of northwest & central India and eastern parts of southern Peninsula. Below normal seasonal rainfall most likely over some areas of north, east, northeast parts of country and western parts of south peninsula, IMD said the IMD forecast.

What it Means for the Economy ?

The arrival of South-West Monsoon almost at the normal time is a good news for the otherwise stressed Indian economy due to the ferocious second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. A normal Monsoon season would favor the agriculture sector that contributes nearly 15% of GDP as well as rural income that could push up rural demand.
