Govt places orders for additional 44 crore doses of vaccines to SII, Bharat Biotech

New Delhi: Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement on free vaccination for all people above 18 years, the union government has placed orders for procurement of additional 44 crore doses of Covishield and Covaxin. The vaccines are expected to be delivered by September.

“ Following Prime Minister’s announcement, the ministry of health has placed orders for 25 crore doses of Covishield to Serum Institute and 19 crore doses of Covaxin to Bharat Biotech on 8th June. These are in addition to the vaccine orders already placed with both the manufacturers. The government has also released 30 per cent advance to the manufacturers for these additional doses” said Dr. V.K. Paul, member NITI Ayog and chair of the National Expert group on vaccine administration for COVID-19 (NEGVAC).

Apart from these the government has recently placed an order with Biological-E Limited for procurement of 30 crore doses of vaccine.

Dr. Paul said that the government is giving priority on strengthening research and development, expanding capacity and augmenting availability of vaccines. It is expected that by July the government would have availability of 53.6 crore doses of vaccines and by September 74 doses of vaccines.
