PM lays Foundation stone for 1.2 MMTPA Talcher Fertilizer Plant, to be commissioned by 2022

Bhubaneswar (22nd Sept 2018): The Prime Minister Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone for the revival of India’s first coal gasification-based fertilizer plant at Talcher. The project is scheduled to be commissioned by 2022 and will ensure easy availability of urea in Odisha as currently there is no urea plant in the state.

Modi launched the commencement of work for the Talcher fertilizer plant with pet coke blending, marking a significant milestone towards achieving the Government of India’s vision of making the country self-sufficient in the production of fertilizers through the revival of closed plants.

The fertilizer plant is being developed by Talcher Fertilizers Limited (TFL), a joint venture company of GAIL (India) Limited (GAIL), Coal India Limited (CIL), Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers Limited (RCFL) and Fertilizer Corporation of India Limited (FCIL), at an estimated investment of Rs. 13,000 crore.

 

The project will have an output of 1.27 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) of ‘Neem’ coated prilled urea using coal and petcoke as feedstock.

The revival of the Talcher project will ensure huge investment in the fertilizer sector from the government through PSUs. This will create job opportunities and also boost the economy of the state and the eastern region.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik thanked the Prime Minister for the commencement of work of coal gasification-based fertiliser plant at Talcher which was a long-standing demand of #Odisha, assures all support from State Government.

“TFL will be India’s first Coal Gasification based fertilizer project & will revive the fertilizer sector in Talcher resulting in the increased indigenous production of urea. It will create huge direct & indirect employment apart from boosting the economy in Odisha & Eastern India,” said Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
