Bhubaneswar: Six years ago this newborn infant was lying in a garbage yard, struggling to save herself from the stray dogs, who were fighting to make her a feast. Yesterday, the brave little girl saw a new dawn in her life when she was adopted by an American Couple.

On 18th February, just a few days old infant ‘Aparajita’ was dumped in a garbage yard near the Bhadrak Bus Stand fighting with stray dogs, who had already chomped one hand of the infant girl. However, a local young journalist Santanu Panda saved the girl and informed the local police and child care authorities. She was then handed over to the nearby orphaned child care centre Vatshalya. The caretakers of the centre named her as  ‘Aparajita’, means she who cannot be defeated.

Aparajita once again proved her name yesterday when US-based couple  Mathe James Spoda and Meredith Kai Spoda – adopted the one-handed girl. The couple has two sons and they wanted to adopt a baby girl.

“We are blessed with two baby boys and wanted a girl child. So, we thought of adopting her,” expressed Meredith. Yesterday, the child was handed over to the new parents in the presence of District Collector Gyana Das, Deputy Collector Shyama Bhakta Mishra, Child Protection Officer Padman Ray, Child Welfare Committee member Dr Sudarsan Barik, Namita Bal, Child Protection Unit Probationary Officer Subrat Das and Swagatika Barik among others. “It is an emotional moment for us. We are happy that Aparajita is being adopted. We have asked the couple to keep us posted about her every six months,” Dr Sudarsan Barik said.
